The Upside Down

The Upside Down is a social media experience with colourful photo opportunities all about ‘The New Dutch’. The museum has 25+ differently-themed rooms that tell the story of Amsterdam’s culture in a light-hearted way. If you’re looking to have a laugh and take some fun photos with friends, this is just the place!

Please note that not all features in the exhibition rooms are wheelchair-friendly, as several photo opportunities require you to climb up several steps. Some parts of this museum have narrower pathways. Specific measurements are listed below.

Accessibility

  • The main entrance has manual doors. The doors are quite heavy. Wheelchair users may need assistance entering/ exiting the building.

  • There is a wide but steep ramp at the start of the exhibition

  • There are a few sections of the Upside Down route with narrower pathways:

    • The mirror room has a maze with paths that are 97 cm wide

    • The vortex tunnel at the start of the exhibition is 89 cm wide

    • The door leading to the metro room is 85 cm wide

    • The narrowest part of the metro room is 71 cm wide

  • Lift to every floor

  • There are ramps from one room to the next; however, some doorways have a short steep ramp that may require assistance to navigate. From the Metro Room to the Mondriaan Room, there is currently a 5 cm drop from one floor level to the next.

  • While every Upside Down room has accessible opportunities to take photos, some features are up on a higher level or platform (inaccessible to wheelchair users). Examples include the ball pit, swing, and the Pink Private Jet.

  • Free entrance for wheelchair chaperone

  • Lockers at different heights. Personal belongings can also be stored in a separate room — please ask a member of staff

  • Accessible museum cafe

  • Accessible gift shop

A wide, steep ramp leads up to the vortex. Wheelchair users may need help getting up.

The narrowest passageway in the museum is between this pole and floor bar (71 cm wide)

While some parts of the exhibition rooms can only be accessed via steps, each room has wheelchair-friendly photo opportunities.

While the inside of the Pink Private Jet is not wheelchair-friendly, this photo shows other photo opportunities next to the plane.
